Well, the Frenchman has been in the States for well over eight years. People who meet him for the first time are automatically enthralled by his accent....they swoon, ask him to speak French and just listen to the jumble of English words manipulated by a French tongue.
This lasts until about the second or third meeting when we are in a social situation and you see the Frenchman talking to someone formerly attracted by his charming accent. Now, they look a little funny, their eyes are glazed and they listen intently to have any chance at decipering what the Frenchman is saying....they are polite but quickly dart their eyes around seeking a fellow American to which to cling ...and escape conversation with the Frenchman.
