When I lost my job in the wine business several years ago (aren't the PR people always the first to go??!) I initially thought I had to get right back on that horse. Yes, that horse that rides away with your family life and neighs in your face when you say you want a life. How many times do we compromise our children and husbands in the quest of a paycheck?
My daughter, Charlotte, had been in day care since she was eight weeks old. I was the one in the family with a steady job. My husband, a professional sailor, did well...but not all the time. I wanted a certain lifestyle so I had to provide it.
When we moved to California in 2000, prices of homes were escalating, literally, as we were looking for a place to live. It was inbelievable what people would pay for something I would never have considered decent habitation in my midwest days. Rather than get frustrated, we jumped on this bandwagon...this horse was not riding without me!
First home-sweet-home tract....my parents came to visit and the pity was clear on their faces...with all that education and a decent job, look where she lives, Jack. But, my strategy had been laid. Look, you could reserve a new home for $1000...refundable. No risk there. I sold that house six months later for $95,000 more than we paid.
So, when the job was the victim of a grape glut and sliding wine prices, I looked at the real estate market for some serious returns. Not selling or buying for someone else, but buying, owning, renting, renovating, flipping, investing, building, selling, partnering, profiting for myself...or should I say my family. I got creative and I have fun, so follow me as I weave through the market and find out how to really enjoy making a lot of money while managing your time your way....whether it be picking up your children at school when the bell rings (for the first time ever) or yanking them out of school to look at yet another cool project...this time in the Caribbean. There are so many ways to invest so check back often for ideas.
